In Year 2 at Whittington PS, we aim to create a safe and happy environment where our students are valued, praised and encouraged to achieve success. Our students are provided with daily opportunities to develop their reading, writing and numeracy skills through learning with concrete materials and use of technological devices.
We apply a consistent approach to our reading by utilising a reading instructional framework and engage students in purposeful reading activities in small/whole group situations. Within the instructional framework, activities are designed to develop students’ fluency, reading comprehension, vocabulary development and word knowledge.
In writing, students participate in the development of various creative and non-fiction texts. Within writing sessions, children aim to develop sentence structure, use of punctuation, expressive language and understand of the writing process. Students are taught to identify the purpose, structure and textual/language features of the different text types.
Numeracy in Year 2 is taught with a focus on developing students’ content knowledge through implementing open ended problem solving activities and the real world application of skills. We endeavour to support students to recognise how mathematics in the classroom connects to maths in everyday life.
We connect our learning through our Inquiry units whereby students are encouraged to make links between our everyday learning and our ‘big learning concepts’ such as; Identity, Creativity & Expression, The Physical & Natural World, Where We Are In Place & Time and Social Responsibility and Citizenship.
