Year 3/4 at Whittington Primary School is an important transitional time as students have graduated from the junior school to the senior school. Students are made aware that the expectations of their academic and social responsibilities have moved forward. Our students are exposed to vibrant, creative approaches to reading, writing and numeracy skills through learning with hands on activities and the use of the latest technology.
School wide, we adhere reading instructional framework that engages students in purposeful reading activities in small/whole group situations. Utilising this instructional framework means that activities are developed to advance students’ fluency, reading comprehension, vocabulary development and word knowledge.
In writing, students participate in the development of various creative and non-fiction texts such as narrative, informative and procedural. Within writing sessions, children aim to develop the writer’s craft, including the use of punctuation, expressive language and understanding of the writing process. Students are taught to identify the purpose, structure and textual/language features of the different text types.
Numeracy in Year 3/4 is taught using a maths instructional model with the focus on developing students’ content knowledge through implementing open-ended problem solving activities and the real world application of skills. It’s our firm belief through implementing engaging and enjoyable activities students will see the importance of having a good skill base in mathematics.
We connect our learning through our Inquiry units, where students are encouraged to make links between our everyday learning and our ‘inquiry unit’.
